Fiberglass:

Fiberglass insulation is a pink batt or roll of fiberglass (glass in a fibrous form) that comes in varying thicknesses and may be faced or unfaced. It is the most common and cost-effective method of insulating a building. The rolls are easy to install and require no special equipment. Fiberglass also provides excellent acoustical dampening.

Rock Wool:

Rock wool is a new application of an old tried-and-true insulator. It is a by-product of iron ore and is highly fire resistant. It is combined with an adhesive and sprayed into wall cavities. Rock wool meets Vermont’s current commercial energy standards, has a high STC (sound transmission class) rating, will reduce long-term energy costs, and is made of over 60 percent recycled content.

Damp Spray Cellulose:

This product is made of over 80 percent recycled newspaper and is sprayed into the wall cavity. It is combined with an adhesive or a liquid that activates an adhesive in the product.

Spray Foam:

Spray foam is a closed-cell sprayed-in product, usually made of polyurethane. It is a monolithic insulator that provides an air and vapor barrier. It has the highest R-value of all insulating products and is the most energy-efficient insulator on the market.

Blown-in Cellulose:

This type of insulation is a blown-in product made of 80 percent recycled newspaper. It is the least expensive insulation, is quick to install, can be installed at any thickness to achieve a desired R-value, and has no real disadvantages. It is the type of insulation most commonly found in attics.
